Fail Safe

Fail Safe begins when a technical failure sends American bombers past their fail-safe point toward Moscow. The nightmare is not a deliberate first strike but a system error inside a Cold War command structure.

Both films came out in 1964 and deal with accidental nuclear war, but Sidney Lumet's Fail Safe plays the scenario as a grave thriller. Stanley Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove uses satire, while Fail Safe stays focused on procedural dread and moral consequence.

Henry Fonda plays the President, who spends much of the film trying to prevent nuclear escalation by phone. Walter Matthau also appears as Professor Groeteschele, a civilian strategist with a colder view of nuclear conflict.

Moscow is the accidental target, and the President's final decision is built around preventing a full Soviet retaliation. The ending is famous for its brutal logic: one city is sacrificed to keep the conflict from becoming global nuclear war.
