Faro de Cabo de Palos stands on the Cabo de Palos peninsula in Cartagena, Murcia, Spain, beside the Mediterranean and near the Mar Menor. It is not located on the southwestern edge of the lagoon itself.
When was Faro de Cabo de Palos built?
Construction began in 1862 after an older Renaissance tower was demolished, and the new lighthouse was inaugurated in 1865. The stones from the earlier tower were reused in the new structure.
Why is Cabo de Palos Lighthouse so tall?
The tower rises about 51 meters above its base, which sits on rocky ground roughly 30 meters above sea level. That elevation was needed to give the first-order lighthouse a geographic range of more than 20 miles.
Was Cabo de Palos Lighthouse used for training?
Yes, the station housed the Theoretical and Practical School for Lighthouse Keepers between 1875 and 1900. The lighthouse was electrified in 1960 and remains part of Spain's maritime signaling network.
