Ferry Building Marketplace

The Ferry Building is located on the Embarcadero waterfront in San Francisco, California, right at the foot of Market Street. It stands directly along the city's eastern shoreline, serving as a prominent landmark for commuters and tourists. Its clock tower was historically the first thing sailors and travelers saw when arriving in the city by boat.

The current Ferry Building was completed in 1898, designed by the local San Francisco architectural firm Page & Brown. It famously survived both the 1906 earthquake and subsequent fires with relatively minor damage. It originally served as the primary transit hub for ferries arriving from the East Bay before the construction of the Bay Bridge.

The marketplace is renowned for housing some of the Bay Area's most elite artisan food producers, including the famous Cowgirl Creamery and Acme Bread. Visitors can also grab fresh oysters at the Hog Island Oyster Co. or locally roasted coffee from Blue Bottle Coffee. It serves as a premier culinary destination focusing heavily on sustainable, farm-to-table goods.

A highly popular outdoor farmers market takes place in the plaza directly in front of the building on Saturdays from 8 AM to 2 PM. There is also a smaller, less crowded market held on Tuesdays. These markets are managed by the Center for Urban Education about Sustainable Agriculture (CUESA) and feature organic produce from regional farmers.
