Mercado Central Valencia

The Mercado Central was designed by architects Alejandro Soler March and Francesc Guardia Vidal, and construction took place over more than two decades before the market officially opened in 1928. The building is one of the largest covered markets in Europe and is considered a masterpiece of Valencian Art Nouveau (Modernisme) architecture.

The Mercado Central is built in the Valencian Art Nouveau style, known locally as Modernisme, which was the Catalan and Valencian variant of the broader European Art Nouveau movement. The building features extensive use of iron, glass, and ceramics, with decorative elements including colorful Valencian tilework, stained glass, and ornate forged-iron structures.

The market houses nearly 1,000 stalls selling fresh produce, meat, seafood, cheeses, spices, and a wide variety of traditional Valencian foods. Visitors can find local specialties including jamón ibérico, fresh seafood from the Mediterranean, seasonal fruits and vegetables, and ingredients for paella valenciana, the signature dish of the region.

The Mercado Central is located in the Ciutat Vella, the old quarter of Valencia, in the Mercado district near the Silk Exchange (La Lonja de la Seda), a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also within walking distance of the Central Market's adjacent church, the Iglesia de Santos Juanes, and a short distance from the Valencia Cathedral in the heart of the city's historic center.
