description Grand Bazaar Overview
Istanbul's Grand Bazaar is a covered commercial complex whose development began in 1461, after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople. It expanded over time into a network of roofed streets containing thousands of shops. Rather than being a single market hall, it functions as a connected trading district, with passages and entrances linking different sections of the historic structure. Traditional concentrations of trades help shape its character, including areas associated with jewellery, carpets and leather goods.
Local commerce operates alongside businesses serving international visitors, so the bazaar is both a working marketplace and a major tourism destination. It suits travellers interested in Ottoman commercial architecture and the practical organisation of an old trading centre. Its defining feature is the relationship between enclosed streets and specialised shops, which makes browsing feel different from moving through the aisles of a modern indoor market.
