description Tabriz Historic Bazaar Overview
In northwestern Iran, the Tabriz Historic Bazaar Complex preserves a covered commercial district shaped by the city's role in Silk Road trade. Long-established routes connected Tabriz with markets to the east and west, and the bazaar developed as a place for exchange as well as daily urban life. Its importance extends beyond the sale of goods to the organization of commerce within the city. Domed halls and caravanserais form part of a network that also includes mosques and sub-bazaars associated with particular trades.
UNESCO inscribed the complex on the World Heritage List in 2010, recognizing its significance as an example of Islamic commercial architecture. It suits an interest in historic marketplaces and the built environment of trade. Unlike a single market hall, its character comes from interconnected spaces that serve different commercial and social functions.
