Construction of the Grand Bazaar began in 1455, shortly after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople, under the order of Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror. It was progressively expanded over the following centuries into one of the world's largest and oldest covered markets.

The Grand Bazaar contains over 4,000 shops spread across a labyrinth of more than 60 covered streets and alleys. It remains one of the largest covered markets in the world by number of vendors.

The bazaar is famous for its jewelry, especially gold pieces, Turkish carpets and kilims, ceramics, leather goods, spices, and lanterns. Many sections are organized by trade, so streets cluster similar merchants together, making it easy to compare prices.

The Grand Bazaar is generally open Monday through Saturday from roughly 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM, and it is closed on Sundays and Turkish public holidays. Individual shop hours can vary, with some closing earlier during Ramadan.
