Fleischmann's Glass Frog

description Fleischmann's Glass Frog Overview

Fleischmann's glass frog (Hyalinobatrachium fleischmanni) is a small, nocturnal amphibian native to the humid rainforests of Central and South America, ranging from southern Mexico to Ecuador. It is characterized by its translucent ventral skin, which allows its internal organs and bones to be visible from underneath. The species is highly dependent on forest streams for breeding, where females deposit their eggs on the underside of leaves overhanging the water. Males exhibit strong parental care, actively guarding the egg clutches against predators until they hatch.

help Fleischmann's Glass Frog FAQ

Why can you see through Fleischmann's glass frog?

Its belly has translucent skin through which internal organs can be partly visible. The green upper surface still provides camouflage when the frog rests on leaves above tropical streams.

Where does Fleischmann's glass frog lay its eggs?

Females place gelatinous egg clutches on leaves positioned over flowing water. After hatching, the tadpoles drop from the leaf into the stream below.

Do male Fleischmann's glass frogs protect the eggs?

Males remain near clutches and can guard them against predators and dehydration. This leaf-guarding behavior is especially important because the eggs develop in exposed vegetation rather than underwater.

Where can Fleischmann's glass frog be found in the wild?

Hyalinobatrachium fleischmanni ranges from southern Mexico through parts of Central America and into northern South America. It is closely associated with humid forest vegetation beside streams needed by its tadpoles.
