Flip Phillips was an American jazz tenor saxophonist best known for his energetic, hard-driving performances during the swing and bebop eras. He rose to prominence playing with Woody Herman's First Herd in the mid-1940s before establishing himself as a solo act. Phillips became highly recognizable for his extensive touring and recording with Norman Granz's Jazz at the Philharmonic (JATP) concerts. His robust playing style was heavily influenced by earlier tenor giants like Coleman Hawkins and Ben Webster.
