The flying steamer duck is the species Tachyeres patachonicus, a South American member of the steamer duck genus Tachyeres. It occurs in southern parts of Argentina and Chile and differs from the flightless or nearly flightless steamer ducks in retaining the ability to fly. Like related steamer ducks, it is a waterfowl species associated with coastal and aquatic habitats and is of interest in studies of the evolution of flightlessness.
