Fomes fomentarius is a perennial bracket fungus commonly called tinder fungus or hoof fungus. It forms hard, hoof-shaped fruiting bodies on the trunks of living or dead broad-leaved trees and has long been used as tinder and as a material for fire-starting. A piece of this fungus was found among the belongings of Ötzi the Iceman, who lived around 3300 BCE.
