Forsythia x intermedia

Forsythia x intermedia is a hybrid shrub created by crossing two specific species: Forsythia suspensa and Forsythia viridissima. This intentional cross-breeding was first carried out by German botanist Hermann Zabel in the late 1800s. The hybrid was bred to combine the best traits of both parent plants.

Forsythia x intermedia is widely celebrated for producing its numerous bright yellow flowers on bare branches in early spring. The blooms typically appear in March or April, well before the plant's green leaves emerge. This early blooming period makes it one of the first vibrant signs of spring in temperate gardens.

The most famous and widely planted cultivar of Forsythia x intermedia is 'Lynwood Gold'. This specific variety was discovered in a garden in Northern Ireland and is prized for having an abundance of exceptionally large, deeply colored yellow flowers. It is the industry standard for golden spring-blooming shrubs.

Forsythia x intermedia is a fast-growing, deciduous shrub that typically reaches a mature height and width of 6 to 10 feet. It has an upright, arching, and somewhat sprawling growth habit. It requires regular pruning to prevent it from looking unkempt or outgrowing its space in a landscaped yard.
