description Fort Monroe Overview
Fort Monroe is a masonry coastal fortification at Old Point Comfort in Hampton, Virginia. Construction began in 1819 and the main fort was completed in 1834 under the direction of engineer Simon Bernard; its broad moat and irregular hexagonal design were intended to defend the approaches to Hampton Roads. During the Civil War, Union authorities sheltered escaped enslaved people there under the wartime contraband policy.
