Friedrich Merz is a German politician who has chaired the Christian Democratic Union since 2022 and has served as Federal Chancellor since 6 May 2025. A lawyer by training, he was a Member of the European Parliament from 1989 to 1994 and of the Bundestag from 1994 to 2009, returned to the Bundestag in 2021, and led the CDU/CSU parliamentary group from 2022 to 2025. His career includes a long period in legal practice between his two phases of national politics.
