Olaf Scholz is a German politician and member of the Social Democratic Party, or SPD, who served as Germany’s federal chancellor from December 2021 until May 2025. He led the federal traffic-light coalition formed by the SPD, Alliance 90/The Greens, and the Free Democratic Party. Before becoming chancellor, Scholz served as mayor of Hamburg and as federal minister of finance, and he was succeeded by Friedrich Merz.
