What does Galilean invariance say in simple terms?

Galilean invariance says the laws of classical mechanics have the same form for observers moving at constant velocity relative to each other. A ball tossed inside a smoothly moving train follows the same local mechanics as one tossed in a station.

How does Galilean invariance transform velocities?

In Galilean relativity, velocities add directly: if a train moves at one speed and a passenger walks inside it, an outside observer adds those speeds. This is the classical rule used before special relativity.

Why did Einstein replace Galilean invariance for high-speed physics?

Galilean transformations do not preserve the constant speed of light. Einstein's special relativity replaced them with Lorentz transformations in 1905 for systems where light speed and high velocities matter.

Does Galilean invariance still matter in modern physics?

Yes. It remains the correct symmetry for Newtonian mechanics at speeds much lower than the speed of light. Engineers and physicists still use it for everyday motion, fluid mechanics, and many non-relativistic models.
