Galileo's Telescope

description Galileo's Telescope Overview

Galileo's telescope was an early refracting telescope used in 1609 to observe the Moon and Jupiter's moons, helping transform European astronomy.

help Galileo's Telescope FAQ

Did Galileo Galilei invent the telescope?

No, the telescope was actually invented by Dutch eyeglass makers, most notably Hans Lipperhey, around 1608. Galileo, however, was the first person to significantly improve the design and systematically point it at the night sky in 1609.

What was the magnification power of Galileo's telescopes?

Galileo's early models could only magnify objects about 3 to 4 times, but he soon refined the lenses to achieve 20x magnification. This was a massive improvement over existing Dutch spyglasses and allowed him to see lunar craters.

What were Galileo's most famous discoveries using his telescope?

Using his telescope in 1610, Galileo discovered the four largest moons of Jupiter, now known as the Galilean moons (Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto). He also observed the phases of Venus, which proved the heliocentric model of the solar system.

Where are Galileo's surviving telescopes located?

Two of Galileo's original telescopes, along with one of his broken lenses, are displayed at the Museo Galileo in Florence, Italy. These surviving instruments are beautifully preserved examples of his early 17th-century woodworking and lens crafting.
