description GaoFen-3 Overview

GaoFen-3 is a Chinese Earth observation satellite launched in August 2016 as part of the country's High-Resolution Earth Observation System (CHEOS). It is notable for being China's first C-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite designed for civilian use. Operating in a sun-synchronous orbit, the spacecraft features 12 imaging modes and provides all-weather, day-and-night imagery with a spatial resolution of up to 1 meter for disaster monitoring, water conservation, and environmental protection.

insights Ranking position

GaoFen-3 ranks #103 of 187 in the Satellite ranking, behind NOAA-18, ahead of NOAA-15.

help GaoFen-3 FAQ

Can GaoFen-3 take images through clouds or at night?

Yes. Its C-band synthetic aperture radar sends microwave signals toward Earth, so it does not require daylight and is far less obstructed by cloud cover than an optical camera.

What is GaoFen-3 used to monitor?

Its applications include floods and other disasters, ocean conditions, coastlines, ships, water resources, agriculture, and environmental change. The satellite's radar is particularly useful for maritime observation.

What resolution can GaoFen-3 achieve?

Its highest-resolution imaging mode can distinguish features at about one meter, while wider modes sacrifice detail to cover much larger areas. GaoFen-3 offers 12 imaging modes and a maximum swath reported at about 650 kilometers.

Is GaoFen-3 one satellite or a constellation?

The original GaoFen-3 launched on a Long March 4C rocket in August 2016. Later GaoFen-3-series spacecraft were launched to create a radar constellation with more frequent coverage.
