Gastroclonium ovatum

description Gastroclonium ovatum Overview

Gastroclonium ovatum is a marine red alga in the family Champiaceae, with Gastroclonium ovale among its historical names. It forms brownish-red to purplish, cartilaginous fronds that branch irregularly and bear short, hollow, ovoid branchlets filled with watery mucilage. The species grows on rocks and stones in rock pools, the lower intertidal, and shallow subtidal, as an attached alga or epiphyte; its hollow terminal parts can degenerate after reproduction. Its recorded range includes the northeastern Atlantic and Mediterranean.
