description GE U50C Overview
The GE U50C was a six-axle diesel-electric freight locomotive built by General Electric for Union Pacific in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Its C-C wheel arrangement placed three powered axles in each truck, while two diesel engines supplied about 5,000 horsepower. The design answered Union Pacific’s demand for high-power freight locomotives without using a single very large engine. U50Cs were later retired as newer locomotive designs became available, leaving the type as a historical example of twin-engine American diesel power.
