Georges Bataille

Georges Bataille (1897-1962) was a French writer, philosopher, and librarian whose interdisciplinary work spanned literature, anthropology, and economics. As editor of the journal Critique and a founding member of the College of Sociology, Bataille developed theories of transgression, excess, and the "sacred" that influenced later poststructuralist thinkers including Michel Foucault and Jacques Derrida. His major works, including "The Accursed Share" (1949), "Erotism" (1957), and the novel "Story of the Eye" (1928), examined how humans channel excess energy through religious sacrifice, eroticism, and other "useless" expenditures that resist capitalist rationality.
