description Gerlachovský štít Overview

At 2,655 meters (8,711 feet), Gerlachovský štít is the highest peak in Slovakia and the entire Carpathian mountain range, located in the High Tatras near the village of Gerlachov. The mountain was officially renamed Stalinov štít (Stalin Peak) from 1949 to 1959 during the communist period and has also borne other political names before reverting to its original designation. It remains a restricted-access summit for which a certified mountain guide is legally required.
