description Gray Top Shell (Gibbula cineraria) Overview

Gibbula cineraria, now generally treated as Steromphala cineraria, is the gray top shell, a small marine gastropod in the family Trochidae. It is distributed along northeastern Atlantic coasts from Morocco north toward Norway and Iceland and is common on sheltered rocky shores, where it lives on algae or beneath stones from the lower intertidal zone into shallow subtidal water. Its blunt conical shell is gray to yellowish with fine reddish-brown or purple stripes; the worn apex may expose a silvery nacreous layer.
