He independently discovered what are now called Herbig-Haro objects—compact nebulae associated with newly formed stars—around the same period as George Herbig. Haro also co-discovered flare stars with Willem Luyten and helped establish major astronomical institutions in Mexico, including what became the National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics, and Electronics.
