Gymnocalycium andreae

Gymnocalycium andreae is a small cactus native to Córdoba Province in Argentina. It belongs to the Gymnocalycium genus, whose species are commonly called chin cacti.

The species is especially noted for bright yellow flowers, while many Gymnocalycium species produce white or pink blooms. The contrast between the small rounded body and yellow flowers is useful for identification.

Let the potting mix dry substantially before watering again, then drain excess water completely. As an Argentine cactus, Gymnocalycium andreae is more vulnerable to persistent wet soil than to a short dry spell.

It needs strong light to flower well, but intense summer sun can scorch a small container cactus. A bright position with some protection during the hottest part of the day is a safer approach than placing it abruptly in unfiltered midday sun.
