Halka

description Halka Overview

Halka is a Polish opera by Stanisław Moniuszko, with a libretto by Włodzimierz Wolski, centered on the exploitation and abandonment of a young highland woman. Moniuszko first presented a two-act version in Vilnius in 1848 and later expanded it into the four-act form performed in Warsaw in 1858. Combining tragic romance, social conflict, Polish dance rhythms, and highlander musical color, it became an important work in Poland's national operatic repertory.
