Did Hans Lippershey actually invent the telescope?
Lippershey is commonly credited because he submitted the best-known early patent application for a telescope in the Netherlands in 1608. The claim is not exclusive, since Jacob Metius and Zacharias Janssen were also associated with early Dutch telescopes.
Why was Lippershey's telescope patent rejected?
The States General did not grant him an exclusive patent, partly because the device was considered too easy for others to copy. The Dutch government nevertheless paid him to make binocular versions of the instrument.
How did Lippershey's telescope differ from Galileo's?
Lippershey's early instrument used a convex objective lens and a concave eyepiece to magnify distant objects. Galileo learned of the Dutch design in 1609, built improved versions, and turned them toward the night sky.
