help Harris Tweed FAQ
How can I tell whether a Harris Tweed jacket is authentic?
Look for the Harris Tweed Authority's Orb certification label inside the garment. Genuine cloth is independently inspected and must be handwoven by islanders in their homes in the Outer Hebrides.
Does Harris Tweed have to be woven on the Isle of Harris?
It may be woven elsewhere in the Outer Hebrides, including Lewis, Uist, and Barra, despite the Harris name. The yarn must be made from pure virgin wool dyed and spun in the Outer Hebrides, and the finished cloth must also be completed there.
Why is the Harris Tweed Act 1993 important?
The Act gives Harris Tweed a statutory definition and created the Harris Tweed Authority to protect it. A mill-made fabric woven outside the Outer Hebrides cannot legally qualify merely because it resembles traditional tweed.
Is Harris Tweed woven entirely by hand?
The weaving is performed by islanders using human-powered looms in their homes, but mills handle processes such as dyeing, spinning, and finishing. Each completed length is inspected before receiving the Orb mark.
