description HAWC Observatory Overview

High-Altitude Water Cherenkov gamma-ray observatory on Sierra Negra, Mexico, at 4,100 m elevation, continuously surveying the sky for TeV cosmic rays and gamma-ray sources.

insights Why this score

HAWC Observatory ranks #76 of 279 in the Observatory ranking, behind Southern African Large Telescope, ahead of Paris Observatory.

Important wide-field TeV gamma-ray observatory with strong survey role; specialized but well regarded.

help HAWC Observatory FAQ

How does the HAWC Observatory detect gamma rays if they do not reach the ground?

HAWC detects the particle showers produced when high-energy gamma rays strike Earth's atmosphere. Charged shower particles moving through its water tanks create Cherenkov light, which photomultiplier tubes record for timing and direction reconstruction.

How many water detectors does HAWC use?

HAWC's main array contains 300 water Cherenkov detectors, each instrumented with four photomultiplier tubes. The array covers about 22,000 square meters on the flank of Sierra Negra.

Why was HAWC built at 4,100 meters in Mexico?

At 4,100 meters above sea level, the detector sits closer to the atmospheric particle showers it measures, before too many secondary particles disappear. Its Sierra Negra location near Puebla also provides a broad view of the overhead sky.

How is HAWC different from an imaging telescope such as H.E.S.S.?

HAWC continuously surveys a large portion of the sky and can operate day and night because it samples particles at ground level. Imaging atmospheric Cherenkov facilities such as H.E.S.S. directly image faint air-shower light and generally require clear, dark nights.
