Chichen Itza

Chichen Itza is a vast archaeological site built by the Maya civilization, located on the Yucatan Peninsula in modern-day Mexico. It thrived from the Late Classic period into the Terminal Classic period.

The Great Ballcourt at Chichen Itza is the largest and best-preserved Mesoamerican ballcourt in the Americas, measuring roughly 168 meters long. The walls feature incredibly detailed carvings of the violent Mesoamerican ballgame, including scenes of players being decapitated.

Chichen Itza's decline began around the 13th century, likely due to a combination of severe droughts, political uprisings, and the shifting of trade routes. By the time the Spanish arrived in the 1500s, the great city was already a crumbling ruin.

The Temple of the Warriors is a massive stepped pyramid complex surrounded by hundreds of carved stone columns. The columns depict various warriors and deities, reflecting the heavy influence of central Mexican Toltec architecture.
