Hazel Rose Markus is an American social psychologist whose research examines the self, identity, culture, and social inequality. She developed the concept of self-schemas, cognitive structures through which people organize information about themselves. With Shinobu Kitayama, she described independent and interdependent models of the self, showing how culturally shaped assumptions about personhood influence motivation, emotion, cognition, and relationships.
