He Long was a Chinese Communist revolutionary and military commander, born in Hunan in 1896 and died in 1969 during the Cultural Revolution. He helped lead the Nanchang Uprising of August 1927, an early armed revolt associated with the Chinese Communist movement, and later held military and political positions in the People's Republic of China. In 1955 he was appointed one of the ten marshals of the People's Republic, the senior military rank created to honor leading revolutionary commanders.
