Pancho Villa

Pancho Villa was one of the most prominent and charismatic military commanders of the Mexican Revolution, leading the powerful División del Norte. Operating primarily in the northern state of Chihuahua, his forces played a crucial role in defeating the federal armies of President Porfirio Díaz and later Victoriano Huerta. He became a folk hero to many for his battlefield successes and his advocacy for agrarian reform.

In 1916, Pancho Villa led a raid across the US-Mexico border to attack the small town of Columbus, New Mexico. He launched this attack because the United States had officially recognized his rival, Venustiano Carranza, as the head of the Mexican government. The raid was a direct retaliation and an attempt to provoke the US into military action against Carranza's forces.

The US Army launched the 'Punitive Expedition' to capture Pancho Villa in 1916, led by General John J. Pershing. President Woodrow Wilson ordered thousands of troops deep into Mexican territory in response to the Columbus, New Mexico raid. Although the expedition disrupted Villa's forces, it ultimately failed to capture him, leading to a withdrawal in early 1917.

Pancho Villa was assassinated on July 20, 1923, in an ambush in the city of Parral, Chihuahua. He was shot and killed in his car by a group of gunmen, widely believed to be political rivals. His assassination was likely orchestrated by local politicians who feared he was planning to re-enter Mexican politics and spark another rebellion.
