Henry Rowe Schoolcraft was an American geographer, ethnologist, and explorer who lived from 1793 to 1864. During an 1832 expedition in what is now Minnesota, he reached Lake Itasca and identified it as the source of the Mississippi River, a conclusion that helped establish the lake's place in geographic accounts of the river. His wider work also included studies of Indigenous peoples and languages in the Great Lakes region.
