description John Disturnell Overview
John Disturnell (1801-1877) was an American publisher and cartographer based in New York. His 1847 Mapa de los Estados Unidos de Méjico, commonly called the Disturnell map, depicted Mexico and neighboring territory and was used as a reference in negotiations leading to the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The map became important because the treaty's boundary descriptions depended on it despite inaccuracies.
