Henryków Abbey

The Book of Henryków, authored by the abbey's monks in the 13th century, contains the very first sentence ever recorded in the Polish language. This Latin chronicle is heavily studied today by linguists as the foundational document for understanding the early development of the Polish tongue.

Henryków Abbey was founded in 1222 by Henry the Bearded, a prominent Duke of Silesia. It was established as a Cistercian foundation to help consolidate Christian influence and agricultural development in the Lower Silesian region of Poland.

Following its founding in 1222, the abbey functioned as a major agricultural center, introducing advanced Cistercian farming techniques to the region. The monks actively cleared land and managed vast estates, transforming the local economy of medieval Silesia.

Although the surrounding region of Silesia largely adopted Protestantism, Henryków Abbey remained a steadfast Catholic stronghold throughout the 16th and 17th centuries. It suffered significant damage and economic decline during the Thirty Years' War but was later rebuilt in a lavish Baroque style in the 17th and 18th centuries.
