Hierapolis Necropolis

The Hierapolis Necropolis is an extensive ancient cemetery located near the ancient Greco-Roman city of Hierapolis. It is situated in modern-day Pamukkale, Turkey. The site sits adjacent to the famous white travertine thermal terraces.

The Hierapolis Necropolis contains approximately 1,200 tombs. It is considered one of the largest and best-preserved necropolises in Turkey. The cemetery features a diverse range of burial types, including elaborate sarcophagi and large earthen tumuli.

The necropolis showcases a wide variety of ancient burial practices, including towering sarcophagi, tumuli, and house-shaped tombs. Some of the tombs belonged to wealthy Roman citizens, while others were communal burial spaces. Many of the stone coffins still feature detailed inscriptions.

Hierapolis is a UNESCO World Heritage site celebrated for its remarkable ruins and thermal springs. The necropolis itself provides an unparalleled look at ancient funerary architecture over several centuries. The preservation of the 1,200 tombs offers deep insight into the social structures of the Greco-Roman world.
