description Hittite Civilization Overview
The Hittite civilization was an ancient Anatolian power centered on the capital city of Hattusa in central Turkey, with its Old Kingdom emerging around 1600 BCE and its New Kingdom reaching imperial scale before collapsing around 1178 BCE. The Hittites developed an Indo-European language recorded in cuneiform tablets and compiled one of antiquity's most detailed legal codes. At the Battle of Kadesh (c. 1274 BCE), Hittite forces under Muwatalli II fought the Egyptian army of Ramesses II to a standoff, after which the two powers signed a treaty preserved in both Hittite and Egyptian records, often cited as among the earliest surviving written peace agreements.
