help Hunahpu FAQ

What trials did Hunahpu and Xbalanque face in the underworld Xibalba?

In the Popol Vuh, the Hero Twins were subjected to a series of deadly trials in six houses of Xibalba: the Dark House, the Razor House, the Cold House, the Jaguar House, the Bat House, and the Fire House. The Lords of Death designed these tests to kill visitors, and Hunahpu and Xbalanque's father and uncle had perished in them before.

How did Hunahpu lose his head in the House of Bats?

In the House of Bats (Camazotz), Hunahpu tucked his head down to avoid the deadly bats, but grew impatient and looked up too early at dawn. Camazotz, the giant bat god, swooped down and decapitated him, though Xbalanque later fashioned a replacement head from a carved squash so the twins could continue their trials.

How did the Hero Twins defeat the Lords of Xibalba?

Hunahpu and Xbalanque tricked the Lords of Death into participating in a spectacle where they killed themselves and were magically resurrected, proving their mastery over death. When the Lords asked to undergo the same death-and-rebirth ritual, the twins simply killed them and refused to bring them back, ending the power of the Lords of Xibalba forever.

What happened to Hunahpu and Xbalanque after they defeated the Lords of Death?

After their victory in Xibalba, the Hero Twins ascended to the sky where they became the sun and the moon, marking the dawn of a new age of creation in Maya cosmology. This transformation completed the Popol Vuh's creation narrative, in which their father Hun Hunahpu was also resurrected and placed among the maize deities.
