Hypnea musciformis

description Hypnea musciformis Overview

Hypnea musciformis is a tropical and subtropical red alga found in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans. It is commercially harvested as a source of kappa-carrageenan, a hydrocolloid extracted from certain red seaweeds and used for its gelling and thickening properties. The species is therefore relevant both to marine ecology and to seaweed-based industrial production.
