Ignacy Łukasiewicz was a Polish pharmacist and inventor who pioneered the development of the modern petroleum industry in the 19th century. In 1853, he and his associate Jan Zeh became the first in the world to distill kerosene from seep oil, subsequently constructing the world's first modern kerosene lamp for practical use. The following year, he established the first commercial oil well and refinery in Bóbrka, Galicia. His innovations targeted industrial, medical, and civic lighting needs, effectively transitioning society away from whale oil.
