Indian Railways WDM-2

The WDM-2 was derived from ALCO's DL560C design and used the 251-series diesel engine. Initial locomotives came from ALCO before production shifted to Diesel Locomotive Works in Varanasi.

W denotes broad gauge, D denotes diesel power, and M denotes mixed traffic. That designation reflected the locomotive's use on both passenger and freight trains across Indian Railways.

Domestic construction at Varanasi allowed Indian Railways to build and maintain the design in large numbers. For decades, WDM-2s worked everything from express passenger services to heavy freight before electric traction and newer diesels displaced them.

The WDM-3A is a more powerful development of the same broad ALCO-derived family. It retained the familiar long-hood layout while offering greater output than the roughly 2,600-horsepower WDM-2.
