Isshin-Ryu Karate is an Okinawan style of karate founded by Tatsuo Shimabuku in 1956. The system draws on earlier Okinawan karate traditions and is identified by techniques such as the vertical punch, in which the fist is held with the thumb positioned along the top. Training includes kata, partner work, striking, blocking, and controlled application for students studying traditional karate and self-defense.
