Jalapão

Jalapão is in the eastern part of the state of Tocantins in central Brazil, within the cerrado savanna biome. Most visitors access the region via the state capital Palmas, then travel several hours by 4x4 vehicle on unpaved roads into the state park and surrounding protected areas.

The region's highlights include the Cachoeira da Velha, a wide waterfall spanning the Novo River; massive golden sand dunes that rise unexpectedly from the flat cerrado landscape; and the Fervedouros, natural springs where pressurized underground water creates pools so buoyant that visitors cannot sink. Quartzite crystal formations and artisanal handicrafts made from local golden grass (capim dourado) are also distinctive features.

Jalapão's remote location, lack of paved roads, and environmental protection status mean most visitors join organized multi-day expeditions operated out of Palmas. These tours typically include 4x4 transport, licensed guides familiar with the region, and either camping or lodge accommodations within or near the state park.

The dry season from approximately May through September is generally considered the best window to visit, when unpaved roads are most passable and the sand dunes are at their driest and most striking. During the rainy season, roughly November through March, roads can become deeply rutted or impassable and some attractions may be inaccessible.
