James DeWeese

James A. DeWeese was an American vascular and cardiothoracic surgeon associated with the University of Rochester Medical Center. He later served as chair of both cardiothoracic surgery and vascular surgery there.

A clamp-like device developed in 1966 was used on the inferior vena cava to help prevent life-threatening clots without completely blocking venous blood flow. It is one example of DeWeese's contribution to venous and vascular reconstruction.

He served on the University of Rochester faculty for more than 50 years and retired in 2009. His academic work included training many generations of cardiac and vascular surgeons.

James DeWeese died on November 14, 2013, at the age of 88. The University of Rochester described him as a pioneer who helped shape cardiovascular surgery.
