description James Learmonth Overview

Sir James Rögnvald Learmonth was a Scottish surgeon whose work encompassed vascular surgery, peripheral nerves, and the sympathetic nervous system. He held the Regius Chair of Clinical Surgery at the University of Edinburgh and became an influential figure in British academic surgery. In 1949 he performed a lumbar sympathectomy on King George VI as treatment for impaired arterial circulation in the king's right leg.
