description James McReynolds Overview

James McReynolds was an American lawyer who served as Attorney General under President Woodrow Wilson before Wilson appointed him to the Supreme Court in 1914. He remained an Associate Justice until 1941 and became one of the Court's Four Horsemen, the conservative bloc that opposed major parts of Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal. His judicial record is associated with a narrow view of federal power, while historical accounts also describe his hostility toward colleagues and discriminatory views toward Jews, Black people, and women.
