Willis Van Devanter was an American lawyer and jurist who served as an associate justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1911 until 1937. President William Howard Taft appointed him after his service on the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit. During the New Deal era, Van Devanter was part of the conservative bloc known as the Four Horsemen, which often voted to invalidate federal economic regulations and other New Deal measures. His retirement in 1937 helped change the Court's balance.
