Jan Veizer

Jan Veizer is a Slovak-Canadian geochemist known for his influential research in reconstructing ancient ocean chemistry. He produced a widely cited oxygen isotope curve spanning the Phanerozoic Eon, which provides deep insight into Earth's historical climate changes.

Veizer served as a professor at the University of Ottawa and was a prominent researcher at the Institut für Geologie, Mineralogie und Geophysik in Germany. His academic work bridged Canadian and European geoscience institutions.

Veizer's research focuses heavily on the isotopic analysis of sedimentary carbonates. By analyzing the chemical signatures in ancient limestone and shells, he was able to estimate global ocean temperatures and atmospheric changes over hundreds of millions of years.

In the early 2000s, Veizer published a controversial paper suggesting that cosmic rays might have a stronger influence on historical climate than carbon dioxide. While his massive prehistoric isotope datasets are highly respected, his cosmic ray conclusions have been widely disputed by mainstream climate scientists.
