Java Plum / Jamun (Syzygium cumini)

The fruit of the Java plum is known for its sweet, juicy, and distinctly astringent flavor profile. The deep purple flesh surrounds a relatively large seed, leaving a lingering dry sensation in the mouth. It is highly prized in its native Indian subcontinent for its unique taste.

It is widely known as Jamun in India, while English speakers frequently refer to it as Java plum or black plum. In regions where it has become naturalized, such as Florida, it is sometimes called jambolan. The plant belongs to the diverse myrtle family.

In traditional Ayurvedic medicine, Jamun has long been used to help manage blood sugar levels and aid digestion. Modern studies have explored its potential benefits due to its high antioxidant content found in the deep purple skin. The seeds are also sometimes ground into a powder for therapeutic use.

As an evergreen tropical tree, Syzygium cumini thrives in warm, humid climates and can tolerate a variety of soil types. It typically starts producing its oblong fruits after about 4 to 7 years of growth. The fruits ripen progressively from green to a deep, nearly black purple.
